Pinewood Derby

2004 2003  2002  2001  2000  1999

Pinewood Derby: Kits are obtained by the Pack and given to the scout at the November pack meeting.  There are typically two “build” nights (one in December and one in January) where band saws, sandpaper and a scale are available to assist the scout in building their derby car.  The Pinewood Derby kit consists of a block of wood, axles (nails) and wheels.  The small block of wood is formed into a car of the boy's choice. He adds the wheels, weight, and decorations and races the other boys in the Pack with the top three finishers in each age group going to the Shawnee District Pinewood Derby held in April.  The top finishers in the district derby advance to the council derby held in May.

We have the Pack 485 Pinewood Derby Rules online.

Thanks to Mike C. for coordinating again this year and Patti C. for handling the concessions again this year.  Also, a big thanks Bob O. and his son for running the races and tabulating the results (as they have for many years) and to the Boy Scouts of Troop 485 for managing the race track.  The biggest change to this year’s race was the new aluminum track which was purchased primarily with your fund raising dollars.  Sell more popcorn!

2001 pine wood derby

This years races were close as usual, but we had the assistance of a finish line judge for the second straight year. We used the Fast Track Finish Judge from the Micro Wizard purchased in 2000 with our popcorn money. We had eight two way ties and one three way tie recorded by the timer. A tie means that the cars we separated by 1/16 of an inch (about 0.01 second) or less! We had three ties on points that we had to break with two car match races.

Terry J. coordinated the event, and everything came off like clock work. BIG THANKS TO TERRY! We had a concession stand serving hotdogs, chips, and soda. There we lots of bake goods donated by the parents for sale as well. Cheryl P. designed and printed out the Drivers Permits and the Participation Certificates that each boy received.  Bob O. set up the laptop computer, video camera, and projector so the crowd to see the races on the big screen for the first time. Raul V. handled the announcements and Cheryl Butler was the pit boss. We had several folks sharing the starting duties -- Jeremy C., Eddie C, Dennis B., Hal L., and Terry J.. Also, thanks to Laurel O. for handling the signup.

An finally here are the results....
